Traffic on I-85 in Gwinnett County was brought to a halt for nearly four hours Thursday morning following a deadly wreck involving a car and a tractor-trailer, authorities said.

The Georgia State Patrol said the big rig was traveling north near Buford Drive at about 6:30 a.m. when it hit a Kia Soul that had lost control in the rain. The driver’s side of the Kia was struck and its only occupant was pronounced dead at the scene, GSP spokesperson Courtney Floyd said.

The victim was identified as 56-year-old Misteriana Rios Martinez by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Emergency crews helped with lane closures following the wreck, which backed up traffic for a few miles between Suwanee and Buford. Gwinnett police responded to investigate the death, while troopers inspected the tractor-trailer.

Motorists were urged to use alternate routes before the scene was cleared around 10 a.m.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, authorities said.
