After responding to a hit-and-run crash that left one man dead, Clayton County police detectives are searching for the driver of a pickup truck who they believe fled the scene.

Officers responded to the intersection of Maddox Road and Mount Zion Boulevard just after 6:45 a.m. Sunday after initially receiving a call about a person shot, according to Clayton police spokeswoman Sgt. Julia Isaac. Instead of a shooting scene, officers found a man’s body beside the road that had been hit by a truck.

The man has been identified as 57-year-old Billy Jack Worton, Isaac said. Worton’s next-of-kin has already been notified of his death, and an investigation is ongoing.

Detectives have also narrowed the search for the truck down to a Dodge Ram C-1500 in the model year range of 2014-18, Isaac said. The truck might be silver, and it will be missing its passenger-side mirror and headlight.

Anyone with information about this crash or the driver of the pickup truck is asked to call Clayton County police at 770-477-3747 or Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
