Man arrested in Mableton Parkway shooting death

A Cobb County man was arrested Tuesday night and accused of fatally shooting another man hours earlier along a busy stretch of Mableton Parkway.

Police have accused Tyrone Gantt, 44, of Austell, of murder and aggravated assault in the death of 42-year-old Howard Smith of Mableton. Smith was found dead around 3 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Bonanza Trail, just outside the SAE School and a few blocks east of South Gordon Road and Riverside Elementary.

He had been shot in the head, according to Cobb police.

The investigation stretched late into the morning, causing traffic delays through the area.

According to police and information in his arrest warrant, Gantt was out Monday evening with Smith and another individual before the shooting early Tuesday. Investigators believe the fatal shot was fired sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m.

A motive was not released.

Gantt is being held without bond in the Cobb County jail.
