Severe weather and tornado threats are no longer impacting metro Atlanta on Friday.
A wind advisory remains for parts of North and Middle Georgia until 11 p.m. Westward winds are projected to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
A ground stop was previously issued at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport due to thunderstorms, but that has since expired. Departures are being delayed by about 60 minutes.
“Storms typically move 20, 30 mph. Severe storms and tornadoes oftentimes will be up in that 40 to 50 mph range. But this particular storm is moving at 80 mph,” Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Brad Nitz said. “This is just incredible forward motion.”
Due to strong winds, numerous trees have uprooted and fallen. In Cobb, a large tree fell through the roof of a home along Chimney Springs Road while no residents were inside, Channel 2 reported. Powerlines have also been impacted by debris and winds. In metro Atlanta, about 15,000 people were without power for hours, according to Georgia Power, but much of that damage has been fixed.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: Friday started out overcast with scattered showers around the metro area. A line of storms moving in from the west will hit Georgia later this afternoon.
“We’re dealing with a situation where we have all the ingredients for severe weather,” Monahan said. “The question is: Are we going to have enough moisture for those storms to get going.”
The storms are expected to clear out around sunset, according to Channel 2.
In the wake of Friday’s volatile weather, the weekend is expected to be mostly dry, sunny and cooler. The high temperature Saturday will reach the upper 60s and may hit 70 on Sunday. The low temps over the weekend will fall into the mid-40s.
