A man wanted in a Florida robbery was arrested Sunday morning after he was identified from video footage of a “brutal attack” in downtown Atlanta, police said.

Arnold Smiley, 31, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery in Sunday’s incident on Mitchell Street. He is being held at the Fulton County Jail.

Around 7 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 100 block of Mitchell Street where a man was found bleeding from his head, police said in a news release. He was going in and out of consciousness and could not provide a statement to responding officers, according to the release.

Workers for the Loudermilk Video Integration Center, whose analysts manage the city’s surveillance cameras, located footage of the assault and were able to provide a detailed description of the suspect to officers, authorities said.

An initial search for the suspect, later identified as Smiley, came up empty. Around 9:30 a.m., police spotted Smiley in the area and took him into custody. It was determined that he was also wanted out of Orlando in connection with a robbery, according to police.

“We are proud of the work that went into removing this violent felon from our streets,” the police department said in a statement. “This arrest is a testament to the importance of technology in crime fighting, as well as our officer’s determination to keep this city safe and hold suspects accountable.”

A motive in the assault was not disclosed.
