A man is in custody after a road-rage incident Monday afternoon escalated into a shooting in downtown Atlanta that involved police, authorities said.

Officers were called to the area of Luckie and Forsyth streets about 4 p.m. after two people started fighting as a result of road rage, Atlanta police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton said from the scene.

“As the officer was trying to intervene, one of the male suspects returned to a vehicle to retrieve a firearm. Once the male retrieved the firearm, he did discharge his weapon one time and then our Atlanta police officer discharged his weapon as well,” Hampton added.

It did not appear that the officer struck anyone, according to Hampton, but the suspect’s shot hit another man who was at the scene. Police did not say if that man was involved in the original dispute. His condition was not released.

The shooter was taken into custody but he has not been identified by police. Officers were also able to speak to two women who were at the scene.

The department’s homicide unit will be investigating the incident.
