Atlanta police are investigating a fatal shooting at a Buckhead apartment complex Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the Sorelle Apartments in the Lindbergh neighborhood just after 2:45 p.m., Atlanta police said in a news release. One man was found dead at the scene with a gunshot wound. He was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 30-year-old Darien Gatewood.

“Everything is secured as of right now,” Atlanta police spokesman Capt. Jason Smith told reporters at the scene. “It does not appear it was random, but we’re still working out the circumstances of what actually took place.”

The apartment complex is located at the corner of Lindbergh and Parkland drives in a busy area that has drawn attention in recent months due to reports of crime. A Taco Mac location in the area closed during the summer and cited the increase in crime as a reason for shuttering. A shooting at a pool party at a different apartment building in the neighborhood sent three bystanders to the hospital in May.

The Lindbergh neighborhood sits in the southeastern corner of the proposed Buckhead City, which would carve away a large, affluent piece of Atlanta. Supporters of the city proposal have focused on what they see as the current city government’s inability to get a handle on crime, though evidence shows that rising violent crime is an issue nationwide, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported.

This is the second shooting at a Buckhead apartment this week. On Wednesday, a man was shot multiple times at a complex near Lenox Square and taken to the hospital in serious condition. In recent weeks, an employee was shot outside of a Buckhead restaurant where they worked and shots were fired outside of Lenox Square during a robbery attempt.

Several neighbors who were gathered outside the Sorelle Apartments on Friday said they were confused by the police activity; none of them heard any gunshots at the typically quiet complex. One onlooker, who asked not to be identified, had tried to walk into the leasing office but was turned away by police who informed her of the fatal shooting.

Atlanta police are continuing to investigate and have not released further details.
