Clayton County firefighters battled an apartment complex blaze for more than two hours Thursday that displaced a dozen people and claimed the lives of two dogs.

Crews responded around 4 p.m. to the fire at St. James Place, which is located in College Park, according to the Clayton County Fire Department. Clayton police, who also arrived at the scene, shared a photo of the flames and heavy smoke coming from the complex.

When firefighters arrived, they learned that all of the occupants had been evacuated. The blaze was extinguished by 6:30 p.m., officials said.

“Unfortunately, six apartments were damaged in the fire, and 12 people are receiving available resources offered by the Red Cross,” authorities added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
