Forty people were displaced and a dog was killed Wednesday as firefighters battled a massive blaze that tore through an apartment complex in Sandy Springs, officials said.
The fire was reported just before noon at Azalea Park at Sandy Springs on Cedar Run Way, Sandy Springs police said.
Crews responded within four minutes and managed to save three people trapped on their balconies, officials said.
Briana Stowe told Channel 2 Action News she and her boyfriend were awakened by smoke in their third-floor apartment at the complex not far from Ga. 400. In shock, they went to their balcony and tried to climb down as their ceiling collapsed and flames were quickly creeping behind them.
“I was scared. I was terrified,” said Stowe, who dangled off the balcony and tried to jump at one point. “I don’t know how we even made it out.”
Stowe said she made it to the second floor before firefighters grabbed her leg and pulled her to safety, according to the news station. Her boyfriend was also rescued.
Photos showed firefighters using ladders to get a vantage point above the complex, while others fought the fire from the ground. The blaze was contained to one building and destroyed 20 units, officials said.

At around 2 p.m., police said the fire was “knocked down.” Investigators have not determined the cause, and no other injuries were reported, according to authorities.
The fire department is working with the American Red Cross to help those in need of housing assistance.
