A 61-year-old woman didn’t have a gun or a knife Tuesday when a masked man kidnapped her in her own car, but perfume and a swift kick did the trick.

Joyce Kenney made her move using a bottle of Bath and Body Works spray stashed in the side pocket of her Toyota Yaris to spray the eyes of a man who was forcing her to drive through the city.

“He said, 'You (expletive),'" Kenney said. “I reached over and kicked him as hard as I could. He went out the door. I tell you I saw him bounce on the street.”

Kenney then drove to a nearby gas station, where she called police. A man at the pump stayed with her until officers arrived.

“I was afraid he might come after me,” Kenney said.

The man, described as white and skinny and about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, approached Kenney as she stepped out of her Ohio home. Her keys were in the door.

“He grabbed me from behind and put his hand over my mouth and said, ‘Do not scream,'” she said.

The man then grabbed her keys out of the door, forced her into her car and told her to drive. He sat in the passenger seat leaving the door slightly jar.

“I was telling him, 'Please don’t hurt me, don’t kill me,'” Kenney said.

While driving, Kenney started speeding up to about 80 mph and weaving hoping a police officer would pull her over.

“He told me to stop and I said I couldn’t because I was nervous,” Kenney said.

When she got into a lane to make a turn, Kenney said she saw her chance and took aim.

“I always have one (perfume) in the car. You never know when you might need some fresh spray,” Kenney said with a laugh.

The man did not show a weapon, but treated her rough, and Kenney said her arm is still sore from his grip.

“I do think God was looking out for me yesterday,” she said.

Despite the hot day, the man was wearing a jean jacket, gray jeans and gloves. He had on a ski mask that showed his lower face and she said he had a goatee or patch of hair on his chin. He did not ask for money.

The grandmother said she is not likely to buy a gun because of the experience, but her daughter is getting her some Mace.

“She said you are pretty good at spraying, so we will get you some Mace,” Kenney said.

Several officers who searched the area were unable to find the suspect. Middletown police are still investigating.
