16-year-old charged with murder, vehicular homicide 3 months after Cobb crash

A 16-year-old faces four felonies, including felony murder and vehicular homicide, three months after a head-on crash in Cobb County, authorities said.

The teenager, who is not being charged as an adult, is accused of fleeing police in a stolen vehicle, causing his passenger to die in a July 25 crash, Cobb County police said. AJC.com only identifies juveniles who are being charged as adults.

The incident began when officers spotted a black Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen earlier that day, AJC.com previously reported. The officers began a pursuit near Shenandoah Trail about 9:30 p.m.

Officers called off the chase after the Altima’s driver turned south on Mableton Parkway, saying the pursuit had become too dangerous. The Altima’s driver crossed into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle, hitting a Lexus SUV head-on near the Doyle Avenue intersection, police said.

Deangelo T. Lovett, 17, of Austell, the front-seat passenger in the Altima, died in the wreck, police said. The 16-year-old driver was also seriously injured and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The SUV’s driver was also taken to a hospital but had non-life-threatening injuries. A third vehicle was also hit, but its driver was not injured.

The teen was charged with felony murder, first-degree vehicular homicide, theft by taking, attempting to elude police, reckless driving and driving without a license, police said.

He remains in the Marietta Regional Youth Detention Center.
