A teenage passenger in a stolen vehicle was killed Tuesday night after an attempt to escape police ended in a head-on crash in Cobb County, authorities said.

Cobb police spotted a black Nissan Altima reported stolen earlier Tuesday and began a pursuit near Shenandoah Trail in Austell around 9:30 p.m. The chase became too dangerous as the Altima turned south on Mableton Parkway, and officers called it off, police spokeswoman Officer Sydney Melton said.

The Nissan continued onto Mableton Parkway and crossed into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle, Melton said. It crashed head-on into a Lexus SUV near the Doyle Avenue intersection, killing the Nissan’s front-seat passenger and seriously injuring its 16-year-old driver.

Police are not releasing the name of the driver, who was being treated Wednesday at Grady Memorial Hospital, since he is a minor. The passenger was identified Thursday as 17-year-old Deangelo T. Lovett of Austell.

The driver of the SUV was taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The collision also involved a third vehicle, an Infiniti sedan, whose driver did not require medical attention at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation, Melton said. No other details were released about the alleged theft.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cobb County police at 770-499-3987.
