A 10-year-old boy was run over and killed Tuesday evening while riding his bicycle through his Spalding County neighborhood, police said.

Damarius Jones was riding on Winova Avenue in Griffin about 6 p.m. when the driver of a pickup truck backed out of his driveway and struck the child, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Police said Jones was riding east when he stopped in front of a home near a large bush to put on some headphones. He continued riding when the driver of a GMC Sierra backed out of his driveway and struck him, authorities said.

The 10-year-old was rushed to Spalding Regional Medical Center, where he died.

The driver told police he never saw the child’s bicycle, authorities said. No charges are expected.
