An Atlanta woman was in jail and her alleged shoplifting accomplice was being sought by police after they allegedly led officers on a wrong-way chase on U.S. 78 before crashing.

Nicole Denise Freeman, 42, was being held without bond Friday evening in DeKalb County jail, charged with two felonies: theft by shoplifting and obstruction, booking records showed.

About 9 p.m. Thursday, Freeman and an unidentified man were in the Macy's department store at Northlake Mall in Tucker when they allegedly grabbed some clothing, ran outside to a waiting U-Haul truck and took off, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Police said they pursued the couple as they drove the U-Haul the wrong way on U.S. 78 before the truck crashed into a pole near Decatur, nearly splitting in half.

“I was sitting in the apartment and basically we just heard a big bang, that’s how loud it was, real close,” Kaitu Andino, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, told Channel 2.

Freeman and the man allegedly jumped out and ran in different directions.

Officers soon captured Freeman in the Marquis Vista apartments. She was booked into the DeKalb jail about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The woman’s male companion remained at large Friday.
