A Cherokee County woman was charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting in Newton County, an official said.

Rita Mary Dugar, 26, of Canton, was arrested without incident after deputies responded to the 100 block of Sunflower Lane in Covington about 2 a.m. Tuesday, Newton County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cortney Morrison said.

Jon Trevor Townley, 24, was shot during an argument with another man, according to the sheriff’s office. During the argument, Dugar fired a gunshot in the direction of Townley, hitting him, Morrison said. Townley was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
