New dashcam video of a police chase across three Georgia counties shows the moment a car sped past officers about 120 miles per hour.

The footage, obtained Wednesday by Channel 2 Action News, also shows the vehicle’s windshield riddled with bullet holes.

The pursuit began in Meriwether County about 9:15 p.m. Friday when Rodriguez Kemp, 36, of Stone Mountain, drove off from a traffic stop, which was for a traffic violation, according to the GBI.

The chase continued through Coweta and Fayette counties, where authorities joined the pursuit.

Eventually, a Fayette County deputy successfully performed a PIT maneuver, a type of bumping technique, on the vehicle near the intersection of Banks Road and Ga. 85, the GBI said.

Fayetteville police and deputies approached the vehicle to arrest Kemp, at which time he fired on the officers, according to the GBI. Officers then returned fire, striking Kemp numerous times, GBI agent Josh Ayer said in a statement.

“The scary thing is that it could happen anywhere and you never know when it’s going to happen and you just have to be prepared,” witness Paige Hughes told Channel 2.

Medical crews took Kemp to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Ayer did not have an update on Kemp’s condition Wednesday.

“Luckily nobody else got hurt,” Hughes said. “My heart goes out to him and his family, but when they tell you to stop you better stop.”

The GBI is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol in cases involving use of force. This is the 90th such investigation in 2018, GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said.

About 88 such investigations were opened last year, Miles said.
