Convicted murderer Warren Lee Hill has been on death row nearly 22 years.
1985 Warren Hill is accused of shooting his 18-year-old girlfriend, Myra Wright, 11 times, killing her. The shooting happened in Cobb County May 30, 1985.
1986 He is sentenced to life in prison in Wright's death
1990 Hill is accused of killing fellow Lee Correctional Institute inmate Joseph Handspike by bludgeoning him as he slept with a nail-studded wooden board. The prison is located in Leesburg, between Americus and Albany in southwest Georgia.
1991 A jury sentenced Hill to death for Handspike's murder.
1993 Both the Georgia Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court deny Hill's initial appeals.
1994 Hill's attorneys allege for the first time that he is mentally retarded. Over the next nine years Hill's attorneys argue in state and federal court that he is mentally unfit to be executed.
2012 Hill's execution date is set for July 23, 2012. But he is given a stay of execution by the U.S. Supreme Court just hours before his execution after his attorneys argued Georgia violated state law when it switched the drugs it uses for lethal injections. Hill's lawyers claimed Georgia did not follow the correct protocol when they made the switch.
Feb. 4 Hill lost his final appeal and his execution date is set for Feb. 19.
Feb. 14 Three experts used by the state to prove Hill was not mentally disabled — and thus ineligible for execution — say they were in error, according to sworn affidavits Hill's defense team released.
Feb. 19 Less than an hour to go before he was to be put to death, the federal appeals court in Atlanta, by a 2-1 vote, halted Hill's execution for at least 30 days.
July 2013 A new execution date is set for July 15. The execution was delayed, then the Georgia Department of Corrections reset Warren Hill's execution for 7 p.m. July 19.
