Authorities apprehended a man after he fled from police and attempted to hide in the bushes outside a Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Training Center, a spokesperson for Tennessee state troopers said.

It was not immediately clear if the man knew he had chosen a hiding spot so close to authorities.

Trooper John Welker heard the rustle of leaves and branches near his patrol car as he left the training center Wednesday. When he went to investigate, he found a man sitting in the bushes. The man wore a white t-shirt, red gym shorts, an ankle monitor and socks. He did not have shoes on and his breathing was labored, according to Tennessee state troopers.

The man, identified as 19-year-old Michael Hughes, told Welker he was trying to get to the YMCA to play basketball. The nearest YMCA is about two miles from the training center.

However, troopers noticed a police helicopter flying nearby and the sound of police sirens. Authorities learned the man had five warrants for his arrest out of the Metro Nashville Police Department and arrested him without incident.

Troopers contacted Nashville police, who said Hughes had fled during a traffic stop nearby. He was transported from the training center to the Metro Nashville Detention Facility for booking.
