Four men on spring break turned the tables on a would-be armed robber.
WPLG reported that the men, who are cousins, were visiting South Beach to celebrate a birthday. When Alex Wisbey, the designated driver for the night, stopped at a Mobil gas station in Oakland Park, Florida.
"I tried to find a gas station that was closest because we were running low on gas," Alex Wisbey, a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, told WPLG.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, surveillance video from the station shows a black Hyundai Sonata pull up to a near by pump. A masked man gets out and points a gun at the men.
"The victims stated that while they were pumping gas, a man with a silver handgun approached them, pointed the gun at them, and stated, 'Give me everything you got,'" the department said in a Facebook post.
“The victims, despite being in fear for their lives, grabbed the armed subject and tackled him to the ground. While the victims struggled with the armed subject, a second subject, later identified as Kevin Campbell, ran over and began pushing the victims off the armed subject.”
The armed robber dropped his gun in the fight. WPLG reported that Aric Wisbey, an Ivy Tech student, grabbed the gun and pointed it at the men, who ultimately returned to the sedan and drove out of the station.
A K-9 search lead police to Campbell, 33. Police are still searching for the armed robber, “described as a man with a stocky build, roughly 6 feet tall, about 210 pounds, with a dark complexion and dark hair in dreadlocks,” the sheriff's office said.
According to Aric and Alex Wisbey, police officers told them they were lucky. Although the two have concealed weapons permits in Indiana and experience with firearms, they could have been injured or worse because the gun was loaded.
