For the second time in two weeks, crews worked to put out a fire at a vacant apartment building in northeast Atlanta on Wednesday.

About 9:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the 1100 block of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and saw flames on the first and second floor, Atlanta fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford said.

“Units attempted to go inside, but conditions deteriorated very quickly,” he said, “and the call was made to back out for the safety of our firefighters.”

The fire was eventually extinguished, Stafford said. No one was inside the building or injured.

Firefighters responded to a blaze at the same building two weeks ago, Stafford said.

“There is a possibility that some people may have been living inside or living in the area,” he said.

Stafford said the fires occurred in separate parts of the building.

Officials have not determined the cause of Wednesday’s fire.

A resident in the area, James Sanders-Zachery, said he’s been there since February when another fire occurred in the building.

“(My) first week here, the place caught on fire at night,” Sanders-Zachery told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. “It was really blazing.”

Sanders-Zachery said he’s called the Atlanta city council numerous times to complain about the fires and crime in the area.

“They’re not doing anything for this neighborhood,” he said. “It’s not safe.”
