A 15-year-old was shot and killed in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood Monday night.

Atlanta police spokesman Lukasz Sajdak said the shooting happened in a home at 3806 Adkins Road.

Homicide spokesman Lt. Charles Hampton said a family member shot and killed the teenager, but police at the scene about 10 p.m. were still trying to determine if the shooting was accidental or not.

Though his name hadn't been officially released, friends told Channel 2 Action News Marquez Montgomery, a football player at Mays High School, was the shooting victim.

A weapon was recovered and one man had been detained by Atlanta police, Hampton said, and that man would be further questioned at police headquarters.

“We’re trying to figure out what exactly happened,” Hampton said. “We know it’s a family member.”

Hampton said many people inside the home still needed to be interviewed and an investigation was ongoing.
