A DeKalb County police officer shot a teenager in the leg during a struggle Wednesday afternoon outside a gas station.

The officer, whose name was not released, was dispatched around noon to a Citgo at Columbia and Rainbow drives, near Decatur, on a report of two suspicious people in the area, according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish.

The officer detained two suspects and was conducting a search when one of them, a teenager, began to struggle with her, Parish said. The second suspect, who was not involved in the struggle, was arrested.

The officer used her Taser, but it did not hit the teenager, whose name was not released. The teen tried to grab the officer’s Taser and continued to struggle before the officer shot the teen once in the leg, Parish said.

The teenager was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.

The officer will be on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is usual procedure after a shooting, Parish said.
