A runaway teen with special needs has been found safe by Gwinnett County police.

Family members called detectives Tuesday night and told them they contacted 16-year-old Kaitlin Crenshaw through a social media site, police said.

“Over the course of several hours,” Cpl. Michele Pihera said Wednesday morning in an emailed statement, “detectives worked diligently to identify Kaitlin’s location.”

Detectives eventually found Crenshaw at a DeKalb County residence about 10:30 p.m.

On Sunday, police were contacted by Crenshaw's mother, Laura Bondurant, who told them her daughter had run away from their apartment in Norcross.

Bondurant said she last saw Crenshaw Saturday night and that when she woke up Sunday morning her daughter was gone.

Crenshaw had left a handwritten note behind saying she was leaving voluntarily because of family issues, police said.

Crenshaw, who “has the mental capacity of someone much younger,” was reunited with her mother.

“She was in good health,” Pihera said.
