Atlanta police on Thursday announced an arrest in the Sept. 19 robbery of two students in a Midtown dormitory of the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Richard D. Chaney, 29, was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Oct. 3 on charges on two counts each of robbery by force and false imprisonment.

The robbery happened about 6 a.m. on Sept. 19 at the Spring House, an on-campus housing facility in the 1400 block of Spring Street.

Someone knocked on a dorm room door, and when one of the students opened the door slightly, a man forced his way inside.

“Once he was in the unit, he then grabbed one of the victims, put him in a choke hold, bound [the victim’s] hands, and then proceeded to steal some of the electronics,” Atlanta police Lt. Jeff Cantin told Channel 2 Action News.

The student’s roommate awoke and was also bound, police said. The intruder was soon joined by a second, and the men took electronics, clothing and other items from the room.

Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones said a break in the case came through the Crime Stoppers Atlanta anonymous tip line.
