A man is in custody after allegedly firing multiple shots at a pursuing officer while driving a stolen car Monday afternoon in southwest Atlanta, police said.

The officer began following the stolen vehicle allegedly driven by Ja’marrius Rucker, 22, in the area of Langston Avenue and Murphy Avenue around 4 p.m., Atlanta police said in a news release.

After allegedly firing shots at the officer, Rucker bailed out of the car, which then wrecked into a pole and a mailbox, the release said. Soon after, Rucker was taken into custody and the weapon was seized.

No officers were injured, and officers didn’t return fire, the release said.

Rucker faces charges of stealing a car, stealing a handgun, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault, felony obstruction of an officer, fleeing and eluding an officer and reckless driving, police said.
