A Georgia state trooper wrecked his patrol car Thursday afternoon while chasing a vehicle through Atlanta, authorities said.
The chase began about 3:50 p.m. in DeKalb County when the trooper spotted a lime green Jaguar F-Type traveling 90 mph on I-20 in the westbound HOV lane near Candler Road, the Georgia State Patrol said in a statement.
The man driving the Jaguar was the vehicle’s only occupant, and the posted speed limit on that stretch of the interstate is 60 mph, according to the GSP.
The trooper got behind the sports car and attempted to pull it over, but the driver continued west, striking another vehicle before exiting at Capitol Avenue. From there, the suspect got onto Memorial Drive. The trooper attempted to stop the man as he turned left onto Martin Street by ramming his car, commonly called a PIT maneuver.
“The trooper missed the PIT attempt and continued onto Martin Street where he exited the roadway on the east sidewalk and struck a telephone pole,” the GSP said. “The patrol vehicle became disabled.”
The trooper wasn’t injured in the crash, but the suspect managed to get onto the northbound lanes of the Downtown Connector and escape, authorities said.
The Jaguar was discovered abandoned at a fire station on Edgewood Avenue, according to police. It wasn’t immediately clear Thursday afternoon whether the car had been stolen.
