Police said Friday that a 5-year-old boy found dead in a burning car was murdered before the crash.
"Daniel Dana was murdered. The cause of death was Diphenhydramine intoxication and the manner of death was a homicide," said Capt. Darren Francke of the Montgomery County Police Department.
Investigators said Narges Shafeirad, 33, overdosed her son with Benadryl allergy medicine, then took his dead body and started driving.
Police said she poured gas and started a fire in the car, then crashed it with her dead son inside.
Shafeirad claimed the crash and fire was an accident, police said.
Investigator said Shafeirad’s motive had to do with her divorce and a custody battle with the boy’s father.
Shafeirad was burned over 40 percent of her body, police say, but they don’t believe she intended to kill herself. She was arrested and hospitalized under police guard for burns.
