One person was shot at the Cartersville Division of Family and Children Services office about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Cartersville police said the shooting isn’t fatal, but have not given the victim’s condition, Channel 2 reported. The victim was taken to the hospital.
The shooting happened on the 40 block of Brooks Drive in the DFCS’ parking lot. The victim’s name was not released.
Bartow County Sheriff spokesman Jonathan Rogers said the shooting started on Garrison Street behind the DFCS. The victim and the shooter then ran across the street to a duplex.
Police said the shooter left once they arrived and has not been caught. No details were given on why the shooting happened.
The shooting was not related to the DFCS, police said, but the building was put on lockdown for nearly an hour.
No employees were harmed in the shooting.
“While we are still gathering information about the incident, we are grateful to report that no agency staff were injured or involved in the shooting,” Georgia Department of Human Services commissioner Robyn A. Crittenden and Georgia DFCS director Bobby Cagle said in a joint statement.
Crittenden and Cagle said counselors will help DFCS staff deal with trauma from witnessing the shooting.
