A second grade teacher in Newton County is accused of inappropriate contact with a student, authorities confirmed.

Porterdale Elementary School teacher Deborah Diane Lenox turned herself in Sunday on a simple battery charge after the allegations surfaced, Newton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lt. Selena Williams confirmed to AJC.com.

A mother’s report to the school’s principal alleging Lenox made inappropriate contact with her son led to the investigation that began Aug. 26, Williams said.

“We are aware of Ms. Lenox’s arrest and are cooperating fully with local law enforcement,” Sherri Davis, a spokeswoman for the school district, told AJC.com.

Lenox is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Davis said.

Lenox was released on a $1,300 bond.
