A woman arrested for speeding in a school zone gave police another scare when she told them she left her 2-month-old baby at home alone.

Sheila Arteaga- Arredondo, 21, was charged with obstruction, driving without a license, and reckless conduct, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Arteaga-Arredondo was going 11 miles over the speed limit in a school zone when police arrested her outside Hembree Road Elementary School.

Police pulled her over and tried arresting her, but Arteaga resisted before telling them she left her 2-month-old baby at home with the door unlocked.

Officers went to the Roswell mom’s home to find the baby lying in the middle of a bed.

“Apartment could catch on fire, somebody could break-in,” Officer Lisa Holland told Channel 2. “So many scenarios where a child unattended could be a dangerous or deadly situation.”

Merly Perez, Arteaga-Arredondo’s friend, told Channel 2 the mother was only trying to keep her baby from getting wet from the rain.

“That day it was raining and I believe she didn’t want to take the baby with her.”

Arteaga-Arredondo’s neighbor Jessica Gillespie told Channel 2 she couldn’t see herself leaving her child at home.

“If you can get wet, the baby can get wet,” Gillespie told Channel 2, “It’s not going to hurt her.”
