A Rockdale County sheriff’s deputy has resigned following allegations of drunken driving involving a wreck that injured two people.

Frances Helen Farmer, 27, of Conyers was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane after the wreck, which happened shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday on Zingara Road, Chief Deputy Scott Freeman of the Rockdale Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Farmer submitted her resignation from the force Sunday.

Investigators believe Farmer was driving a 2010 Ford pickup when the truck left the roadway and struck several trees, a spokeswoman for the Georgia State Patrol said.

Two of Farmer’s passengers were transported to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment, State Patrol spokeswoman Franka Young said Monday.

Freeman said in an email that in cases that involve a Rockdale deputy, the Sheriff’s Office asks the State Patrol to get involved “to ensure complete transparency and objectivity.” That is “especially” true, he said, when there’s suspicion of DUI.

Farmer was booked into Rockdale’s jail and released Saturday afternoon after posting bond. She was placed on administrative leave before resigning Sunday following an internal hearing, Freeman said.

“This is an unfortunate incident in which one of our deputies made some very poor decisions,” he said, “but we are very fortunate that no one was killed.”
