A Nevada man has been sentenced to 28 years in state prison for "torturing, killing and dismembering seven dogs," according to The Associated Press.
Jason Brown, 25, of Reno told the judge Thursday he was under the influence of drugs and had no control over his actions during a four-to six-week period when he beheaded multiple dogs and recorded the gruesome killings on tape.
The judge, prosecutor and defense lawyer all called it one of the most heinous crimes they had ever encountered.
Brown was originally suspected of wrongdoing in July 2014 when a dismembered dog was found in a motel room where he was staying. Officers found four dog heads in the refrigerator as they investigated further.
Brown told friends he was "making a jacket out of them" in one video.
He obtained the dogs by searching for free pets on Craigslist. Some of the original pet owners testified that Brown seemed like a "normal, clean-cut kid," according to the AP.
Brown's drug episode (mixing meth, heroine and cocaine) was unprecedented for one psychiatrist, who described it as the worst she'd ever seen.
The videos were only shown to a handful of people, but the audio could be heard in the gallery.
"Those images I watched, I will never forget," the Washoe County District Judge said before issuing the sentence.
Brown is eligible for parole after 11 years.
"It's sickening to hear these things and realize it's me," he said.
