A Gwinnett County woman was fired from her job and faces a felony after being accused of a shoplifting scheme in Athens, authorities said.

Nardine Elysee Gird, 38, of Duluth, was arrested last Monday on a felony shoplifting charge after helping a Dollar General coworker take items at more than a $1,000 discount, Athens police said.

Gird and the other person worked at the store on Jefferson Road, and Gird was discounting items down to only one cent for the other employee, according to a police report. The store’s loss-prevention manager called police May 7 after confronting Gird.

The employee who received the discounts, a 45-year-old Athens woman, has not been charged, the report said.

The investigation by the store also found that some of the items were returned for a full cash refund after being sold at the discounted rate, the report said. The incident report did not disclose who made those returns.

Gird told the store investigator that the scheme took place in March, but store officials said the store suffered substantial losses dating back for months, the report said. However, police said those officials were not able to provide any evidence that Gird was responsible for those earlier thefts.

When Gird was arrested, she told the officer that she committed the thefts to help the other employee and her children, the report said.

Gird was released from the Clarke County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
