A former Georgia corrections officer pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs into the prison where he worked, according to federal prosecutors.

Voltaire Peter Pierre admitted to sneaking methamphetamine, crack cocaine and marijuana past prison security and into the hands of inmates affiliated with the Bloods criminal street gang, U.S. Attorney BJay Pak said Monday in a news release.

Pierre, 39, of Norcross, was hired as a guard at Hays State Prison in Trion in 2014, Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training records indicate.

The drug smuggling started in June 2018 and lasted until his arrest Oct. 1, Pak said. Pierre coordinated with inmates and their associates outside prison to arrange drug drop-offs at motels and at his family’s home, according to officials.

He got the drugs into the prison by hiding them in soup containers and “other seemingly innocuous items,” Pak said. The inmates and their associates paid Pierre through a mobile app, he said.

“Smuggling illegal contraband into a prison not only jeopardizes the safety of staff and inmates, it also fosters criminal activities inside and outside of the prison,” said Chris Hacker, a special agent of the FBI’s Atlanta field office. “Pierre not only violated his sworn oath, but betrayed every hard-working corrections officer. ”

Pierre was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, crack cocaine and marijuana, Pak said. Because a minor lived in the home where the drug drop-offs were taking place, he was also charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on premises where a minor resides.

Pierre was fired from his position at Hays on Oct. 4, POST records indicate. His POST certification was also suspended, records show.

His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
