Police use bean bag round, taser to stop car thief

Officers used non-lethal weapons to take down an accused car thief Saturday morning, police said.
A car chase ended with a suspect jumping from a moving car and taking off toward East Tall Oaks, the Monroe Police Department posted on its Facebook page.
J’Reese Nyquan Cobert took a vehicle without permission and was driving around the area of East Church Street, police said.
Officers knew Cobert had a history of running from police and did not have a valid license when they tried to pull him over near Davis Street. Cobert refused to stop and police said he drove recklessly for approximately one mile as he tried to escape.
When Cobert jumped out of the car as it was still moving, police fired a bean bag round at him. He kept running about 100 yards before another officer tased Cobert and then arrested him. After making sure Cobert was OK medically, he was booked into the Walton County Jail on charges of driving while unlicensed, fleeing and attempting to elude, three counts of failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, obstruction of law enforcement officers, criminal trespass and improper passing.
