Police were sent to a home to investigate a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, the man began shooting at them.

A man was shot by law enforcement officers after the GBI said he fired a gun at police and smashed a vehicle into multiple patrol cars.

Deon Damon Bowden, 27, is in critical condition after the shooting, which occurred Saturday in Monroe County, according to GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles.

The incident began shortly before 9 p.m. at a home on Clearview Avenue in Forsyth, Miles said. A 911 caller told police that Bowden had been involved in a fight with several people at the home.

When Forsyth police and Monroe deputies arrived at the scene to investigate the domestic disturbance, Bowden began shooting at them, Miles said. He then got into a vehicle and started driving north on Blount Street, according to the GBI.

At some point, Bowden crashed the car into several other vehicles, including two Monroe sheriff’s office patrol cars, Miles said. He then pulled out a gun.

Officers fired at Bowden multiple times, and he was hit, Miles said. He was taken to Navicent Medical Center in Macon, she said.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

The GBI was called to investigate the officer-involved shooting. It is the 41st such incident the agency has been asked to investigate in 2020.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the agency’s tally.
