Police are searching for a man believed to have witnessed a shooting that killed a former high school football standout, officials said.

Rodricous Gates Jr. was visiting the unnamed witness who was co-renting a unit in the Hampton Downs Apartments, Clayton County police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

Gates, 20, who was killed Aug. 6, was found lying face down outside one of the apartment buildings. He was a former quarterback at Mundy’s Mill High School.

Police said Gates was involved in an argument with someone at a building in the complex, where the shooting took place. He then ran to another building, collapsed and died.

The second renter at the apartment came forward, but “she has not assisted in any way with identifying the male,” Marbury said.
