An Alabama man who posted a photo of himself on a social media site pointing a gun at a dog is being sought by authorities.
The Facebook post has gone viral since hitting the internet on Sunday night, and Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray told WAFF-TV the phones at his department have been ringing off the hook.
Police said they know who the man is but are not releasing his name now since charges have not been filed. His Facebook username is only part of his real name.
Rays said the photo itself might not be a crime.
“Should it be a crime, yes it should be, but it might not be,” Ray said. “We have to prepare ourselves that it could be a possibility. We are going to gather every fact we can and present it to a prosecutor.”
Ray also said the man pictured has multiple warrants in Tuscaloosa and Florence for misdemeanor charges.
Police said if the man is charged with a crime, it will be for his treatment of the animal and possibly for holding the gun in the photo.
