Deputies are investigating after a bullet hole was discovered in the hood of a minivan belonging to Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke.

The hole was discovered Wednesday afternoon as the car sat parked outside Cooke’s home, the DA’s office said in a statement.

It’s unclear exactly when the shooting occurred, but no one inside the house was injured.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, one of Cooke’s family members noticed the bullet hole in the Honda Odyssey after returning home from lunch about 3:30 p.m.

Authorities said it appears the bullet may have fallen onto the hood after being fired into the air. The trajectory of the gunshot indicates the bullet traveled straight down, Lt. Sean DeFoe said. It was recovered from a compartment under the hood, but didn’t have enough velocity to enter the van’s engine.

DeFoe said investigators are looking into the possibility that the damage may have been the result of celebratory gunfire over Memorial Day weekend.

“We’re not ruling anything out,” he said. “It was just one round that went into the car. We got the bullet itself and we’re checking to see if there were any calls about shots fired in the neighborhood.”

Should an arrest be made in the incident, Cooke’s office will recuse itself and a special prosecutor would be appointed, his office said Wednesday in an emailed statement.

As district attorney, Cooke prosecutes cases in Bibb, Crawford and Peach counties. He is serving his second term and running for a third this fall.

In April, police were called to the Lithonia home of DeKalb County’s solicitor-general after multiple shots were fired into Donna Coleman-Stribling’s house. Police said Coleman-Stribling was home with her husband and their two sons when gunfire erupted about 10 p.m.

Investigators discovered different types of shell casings in the street in front of their house, according to a DeKalb police incident report. No arrests have been made in that case, but authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information about the suspects.
