Two men are in jail after a routine traffic stop led to a police chase near a Walton County middle school, authorities said.
Philemon Gray and Terrill Banks are both facing numerous charges after the incident, jail records show. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy had to use a PIT maneuver to stop the car the two men were in before students were put in danger.
The chase started when Gray, who was driving, refused to stop when a deputy tried to pull him over on Ga. 81 near Walnut Grove on Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The deputy followed the vehicle and saw it turn into Youth Middle School in Loganville.
The deputy saw children in the area, the sheriff’s office said. That’s when he performed the PIT maneuver.
The sheriff’s office said Gray had “numerous warrants out of DeKalb County including robbery.”
Gray had a gun and Banks had a knife, officials said.
Banks was booked into the Walton jail Tuesday and is charged with obstruction of an officer, jail records show. Authorities said he had warrants out of DeKalb County accusing him of shoplifting, fleeing, obstruction, theft by receiving and robbery.
Gray is charged with improper turn, fleeing to elude, failure to maintain lane, passing on solid yellow line, speeding, driving on wrong side of road, reckless driving and licence plate used to conceal ID in connection with the incident. Walton officials said he also was charged with felony fleeing, seat belt violation and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
