Police chase ends in teen’s death

High speed chase has fatal ending

A teenage girl is dead and two lanes of southbound I-85 were closed for several hours Sunday afternoon following a police chase that ended in Fairburn.

Police were chasing a car that had been identified as stolen from Union City sometime before 1 p.m., authorities said.

Channel 2 Action News reports the car had been carjacked.

The chase entered I-85 and the stolen car eventually went off the road near Bohannon Road, police said.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the person driving the 1996 BMW lost control and the car struck a culvert, rolling the car several times and ejecting both people inside before hitting a tree.

Cheyenne Pierce, 17, was thrown from the vehicle and killed, the State Patrol said.

The surviving passenger, 18-year-old Demetrius Roberts, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his condition was unknown.

Both teens are from Union City, authorities said.

Troopers investigating the wreck closed the two left lanes on southbound I-85 for roughly two hours on Sunday, authorities said.

It is unclear how the chase started, or what charges, if any, will be filed against Roberts.

Union City Police officials could not be reached Sunday for comment.
