A Caldwell County sheriff's deputy, responding with other officers to a burglary call, shot and killed a person in Lockhart early Friday after the person didn't comply with deputies' demands to put down a shovel, the Caldwell County sheriff's office said.
The shooting happened in the 1000 block of South Main Street behind the Dairy Queen on Colorado Street (U.S. 183), the sheriff's office said. Lockhart police said they were called in to assist Caldwell deputies around 4:20 a.m.
Caldwell County deputies were responding to a report of a home burglary in the area. They confronted a person on Main Street they believed to be the burglary suspect, the sheriff's office said. The person was holding a shovel, and when the person didn't comply with deputies' commands to drop the shovel, at least one deputy fired his weapon, authorities said.
The man died at the scene, Caldwell County sheriff's officials said. At press time Friday, the sheriff's office hadn't yet identified the person who was killed.
Investigators from the Texas Rangers are looking into the incident, state Department of Public Safety officials confirmed.
The use of force by Caldwell County deputies was called into question last when a Lockhart man filed a federal lawsuit against the sheriff's office, accusing deputies of excessive force.
Lawrence Faulkenberry alleges in his lawsuit filed in December that deputies arrested him on fabricated assault charges during a disturbance call on Jan. 15, 2015. Faulkenberry, who was arrested and accused of assaulting a deputy before being freed on bond, is suing for unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
