Two dogs found in poor condition after being abandoned in a crate on the side of a Henry County road are recovering.

Someone alerted authorities June 6 about the dogs, who were abandoned off Emporia Loop near the intersection of Bridges Road and Willow Lane in McDonough.

One of the dogs is a male, believed to be a Pekingese-type mix, and the other, a female, is believed to be a poodle mix, according to the Henry County Animal Shelter.

They were missing chunks of hair and were very skinny when they were found.

Now in the care of the Henry County Humane Society, the dogs are gaining weight.

“(It’s) a matter of adequate care and good, old-fashioned TLC,” Gerri Yoder, director of the county’s animal shelter, told AJC.com.

According to animal rights group PETA, their fur was badly matted and soaked with urine. One had a broken leg that hadn’t healed correctly.

Authorities are investigating, and no arrests have been made.

PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 in hopes it will lead to an arrest for cruelty to animals.

“We are hopeful that somebody will come forward with information regarding these dogs,” Yoder said.
