A motorcyclist was critically injured late Friday night after crashing in downtown Cumming, causing the bike to flip at least once.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said investigators suspect the driver may have been speeding and under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

A witness told deputies that she saw the motorcycle moving at a high rate of speed toward a curve along Canton Road shortly before the road meets West Maple Street, Miller said. The witness said she saw the motorcycle wobble as the driver began to lose control.

The motorcycle crossed a grass median before hitting a curb near the Tyson Foods plant, Miller said. The collision caused the bike to flip before it crashed into a fence.

The motorcyclist was thrown from the vehicle and landed in a rocky area near the crash site, Miller said. The driver’s name has not been released.

The driver was taken to a trauma center at North Fulton Hospital, Miller said. Cumming police initially responded to the incident but asked the sheriff’s office to investigate.

“We felt that the (driver’s) injuries could be fatal,” Cumming police Capt. Danny Stephens said. “We had their accident reconstruction team handle the case.”

Deputies also recovered a sawed-off shotgun near the crash site, along with several other items that apparently belonged to the rider, Miller said. No other information on those items were released, but they’ve been taken into evidence.

The investigation is ongoing.
