Athens police are searching for the person they say stole a woman’s sedan Sunday evening with her 11-month-old girl inside.

Officers responded to a vehicle theft and kidnapping call at a home on Windy Hill Place just before 7:15 p.m., Athens-Clarke County police said.

They met with a 22-year-old who said her 2001 Ford Taurus had been stolen from her driveway with her daughter strapped in the backseat, according to police spokesman Geoffrey Gilland.

Investigators notified surrounding counties and the vehicle was discovered in the parking lot of a shopping center on Epps Bridge Road in neighboring Oconee County.

The child was found in her car seat unharmed.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Athens detectives at 706-613-3330, ext. 144.
