Two Georgia police officers have resigned amid investigations into their use of a Taser on a man sitting on his porch, police confirmed.
Monroe police Officer Walter Clough and Sgt. Jerrod Robertson were responding to a call about a large party in Monroe Estates on June 15 when they saw a group of people sitting on their porch and told them to go inside.
Ivan Tory, 32, told officers they didn't need to go inside, the AJC previously reported.
“You’re being very disrespectful,” Tory said. “This is my house. I’m a family man.”
The officers walked onto the porch, used a Taser on him multiple times and dragged him down the sidewalk by his pants before putting him in handcuffs.
He was knocked unconscious for a brief period, his wife Shana Tory told AJC.com. When she went to check on him, she said police pointed a gun at her.
“Who’s next? Who’s next?” the officer yells in a video obtained by AJC.com.
Shana Tory posted a cellphone video of the incident on Facebook.
Ivan Tory was arrested and charged with obstruction.
The officers resigned in late June, a day apart from each other.
The GBI confirmed it is investigating the incident. Police said the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council are also investigating.
Monroe Police Chief R.V. Watts posted a statement the Monday after the incident on Facebook. Without naming the officer, Watts said one of the officers involved was suspended without pay for violating the code of conduct.
“We at the Monroe Police Department understand the importance and need to build and strengthen relationships in our community between law enforcement and our citizens,” Watts said in the statement. “The actions of this officer in this incident did not reflect that and, in fact, brought a negative image towards himself and this agency.”
Watts said he reviewed the cellphone footage and officer video but will not release the police footage until the investigation is complete.
