Tuan Van Nguyen grabbed the 5-year-old daughter of a taxi driver who declined to give him a ride, police said.

A man tried to kidnap the 5-year-old daughter of a taxi driver who declined to give him a ride from Gainesville to Oakwood, police said.

The driver noticed Tuan Van Nguyen was acting strange when he approached her Saturday, according to a post on the Gainesville Police Department’s Facebook page.

When she would not give him a ride, authorities said Nguyen grabbed the woman’s daughter from the taxi.

“At that time, the father of the child, also in the taxi, got out and had to forcefully take the child from Nguyen,” police said.

Nguyen, 35, ran away from the scene in the 400 block of Atlanta Highway, police said. Shortly after officers were called to the area about 7 p.m. Saturday, they spotted him. He took off again before officers captured him a short distance later without incident, police said.

He was taken to the Hall County jail on charges of criminal attempt to commit kidnapping and obstruction of an officer after a medical evaluation at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
