A Craigslist sale went south Wednesday when a man was robbed and shot while trying to deliver the dirt bike he had agreed to sell on the site.

WJZ reported the 27-year-old victim told police he was walking in Baltimore, Maryland, at 11:55 p.m. to deliver the 2008 Honda dirt bike when he was robbed.

The man was asking $2,100 for the bike. Police said there was a struggle and the victim was shot.

"It was basically a sale gone bad. It turned into a robbery. At least one, maybe two suspects were on the scene. They took his bike and an altercation occurred as a result," Baltimore police Detective Donny Moses told WBAL Thursday. "Something that started out with probably great intentions turned for the bad, and he could have lost his life as a result."

Police recommend people don't conduct Craigslist sales alone or in unfamiliar areas and to do so during the day.

"We have to be smarter than that," Moses said. "Safety is of the essence, more than the money. Safety is important."
