Police arrested a New York man Monday after firefighters found a dead cat in an oven while responding to a report of a fire.

Darren Annovi, 42, is charged with one count of animal cruelty.

City of Batavia firefighters found light smoke in an apartment on Main Street when they responded around 9 p.m. to a report of a fire.

“Further investigation revealed the cause of the smoke to be a deceased cat, located in the oven,” Batavia police said in a news release.

No additional details on the cat’s death or Annovi were immediately available.

Annovi was arraigned in Batavia City Court and ordered held on no bail. He is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday.

Batavia police are working with the Batavia Housing Authority on the case.
