A 20-year-old man has been charged with driving under the influence of marijuana in connection with a crash that injured a teenager who was waiting for a school bus Friday morning, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Misael Pena-Larios of Lawrenceville was arrested Sunday and released on bond from the Gwinnett County Detention Center on Monday, according to the sheriff’s department’s website.
Dominique O’Connor, a 15-year-old Berkmar High School student, remained hospitalized at Gwinnett Medical Center on Tuesday. She suffered a broken pelvis, injuries to her hand and cuts on her face, Channel 2 said.
O’Connor was sitting on the curb of Champion Parkway and Lendl Lane in Lawrenceville when a vehicle ran onto the sidewalk and crushed her, authorities said.
Pena-Larios admitted to smoking marijuana several hours before the crash, and the police officer noted the driver “displayed physical signs of marijuana use,” according to the arrest warrant.
Pena-Larios is scheduled to return to court Oct. 10.
